Don Mills - What's in a name

March 11, 2009 - Updated: March 11, 2009

The name Don Mills makes reference to the early 1800’s when a number of mills which included grist (flour) mills, textile mills, and sawmills were established and scattered along the east and west bank of the Don River, hence the "Don Mills".name!

Interesting to note that one of the woolen mills was located in the area of what is now Edward’s Gardens, and a saw mill which operated in the east bank of the Don River in what is now the Donalda Club area. It’s hard to imagine that at one time the Don River was able to flow strong enough to turn the water wheels that operated the mills.
